It never looses it's charm for me and I love it.

Keep thinking I will grow out of it, but no.

Doesn't have to be any big deal in these times of credit crunchiness!

It actually makes me cry the words are so beautiful

And there is not a New Year or celebratory gathering in Scotland where his skillfully penned

'Auld Lang Syne' is not sung at the end of the night

I think Burns was a genius and on the 25th January we get to celebrate and remember him

The Perfect Christmas!

Having done most of my Christmas shopping on-line

I do have to wonder if some of the joy of wrapping up warm

and actually walking - yes, walking to the shops

(remember that?)

has been lost.

It's lovely to come home freezing cold from the shops and sit in front of the stove with

a hot cup of mulled wine.

Get the mixer out and bake, filling the entire house with glorious aromas

Always remembering 'cooks cocktail treat'

Is the preparation the best part?

You see I have this image of how Christmas should be

But is Christmas really ever how we imagine it's going to be???

Ok.

Now.

Be honest -

do you think smothered in brandy,

lashings of marzipan and

a couple of inches of icing.....

They'll really notice???

A place where so much happens,

a huge pot of tea!

Cooking, baking, chopping, preparing -

I love being in my kitchen.

Especially when my friends are round sitting at the island

chatting sharing a bottle of wine, a coffee or my favourite - a cocktail!

While I make some nibbles.

I adore having good friends in my kitchen!

Spring is such a lovely time in the garden with spring bulbs bursting into bloom,

but we have a special little visitor this year, and I'm so excited.

I put bird boxes all over the Wendy-House garden a few years back and they have just been ornaments until now.

Apart from an awful incident last year when a swarm of wasps decided to call one of them home - very unpleasant!

However this Spring I have been taking tea in the summer house and watching a darling little blue tit make one of our houses it's home.

I feel honoured!

It's TOO Late For Me - Save Yourself!!!

Dear Friends

This is a warning!

It always happens around this time of year, I go into my local shop - innocently purchasing a newspaper or magazine.

NEVER suspecting what I will find lurking by the till.

Yes...... you know it;

They are so pretty - all shinny and little and perfectly shaped.

They seem innocent enough.

I remember now, I'm really rather fond of these

I mean honestly, what harm would one do?

I allow my mind to drift back to those carefree days of yore when I enjoyed the decadent Cadbury's chocolate on the outside, that thick first mouthful of silky melting smoothness, then, yes my friends, then the decadence of the oozing fondant beneath!

I slip my hand to hover over the box;
will I - won't I, will I - won't I,
one can't hurt, they are very little.

They are merely a child's sweet/candy and I am an adult and fully in control of my actions.

I make decisions for myself!
But it's too late,
I
decide
to
have
just
ONE!!!

Yes my friends it's too late for me - but if you haven't tasted that first egg yet, just think of me!
I'm on around TWO a day now, well sometimes three.... ok, ok,
FOUR on a bad day.

I am now including them in my grocery shop, buying them in family quantities - with no intention of sharing them with my family.

They have got me, good and proper!

Time to Sew!

Does it really matter if your sewing machine
lying at the back of your cupboard is
something less than 'computerised'?

(yes, you can actually get them - I can
hardly believe it!)

The main thing is they join two pieces
of fabric together and if you are
inventive (you are, chances are I've seen your blog) and have some fabric lying
around you can actually 'make stuff!'

How lovely it is on a cold snowy afternoon to sit in the warmth of your home and sew something beautiful with fabrics you already own.

Something new from something old - I love that!

So if it's your old "Barbie" pink sewing machine

Or something state of the art

Why not lets make 2010 the year when we reuse what we have.
I am always sewing for the Wendy-House, but this year I am going to try
to make as much and buy as little as I possibly can.

I can't help thinking Christmas at the Watson homestead
would have been just swell.

Aren't we lucky to live in a country where we can enjoy all the seasons?
I love the sunshine, I love those lazy summer days in the garden with a chilled glass of wine.
However what could be nicer than sitting in front of the fire on a cold winters day with a mug of hot chocolate and a good book.
I put a log fire on today, and was quite delighted it was raining outside as it made it feel all the more cozy in my little sitting room.

These beautiful Aynsley china spotty cups and saucers, look fabulous as a centre piece on a table or on the corner of your kitchen dresser. I have made some with the old fashioned smell of old Victorian tea roses or the light aroma of earl grey tea.
Once you have used your candle, the dish can be used to make a lovely fresh flower display too!

My Baking Bible

When I was growing up I loved to bake.

Everything I baked in my early years came from this little book, which I was recently given a copy of. This is the actual version which my mouth watering (sometimes!) efforts came from.
It was a little gem!
If you contact Be-Ro you can get a new up-to-date version.
With none of the 'helpful advice' for the woman of the house!
However I'll stick with this one - a stroll down my baking-memory lane.

Candle Making

I am in my kitchen today feeling gloriously creative when it dawned on me you might like a little look at what I am doing!

I thought you might enjoy seeing some candles I am in the process of making today.

They are of course organic soya wax, as always.

They are scented with various natural scents; rose, lavender, tea, etc.

As you can see my vintage containers are very different from the mass produced plain glass jar style.

I like to think my beautiful vintage containers all have their own unique personality.

I am having such a lovely day, the sun is shining in my garden, I have the doors wide open with the radio on in the background.

I am in Love!

With the evidence of the Cypriot sun on my skin and although I only returned home last night, already I long to go back.

Once again I have fallen 'head over heals' in love with this beautiful island.

Graceful pink flamingos return to bask in the glory of Cyprus and enjoy the beautiful salt lakes in Larnaca.

Cypriot people are so friendly and welcoming, and so proud of their beautiful country, rightly so.

I don't know what magical hold Cyprus has over me but I know I'm not alone, just watch when you mention Cyprus to someone who has been, their face melts into a smile and I can see like me, they too are smitten.

The week before I flew out to Cyprus, I was listening to Ken Bruce on Radio 2, and someone mentioned Cyprus on his show, he sighed and said "Ahhh Cyprus, beautiful Cyprus", and I couldn't have agreed more.

Where do I start with how good this photo is of my Mum?

The old deck chairs, the fabulous wooden beach huts, the dress, the hair, I have no doubt the amazing shoes hidden out of shot.

Was I born in the wrong era???

Next I must mention the volume of people on the beach, unbelievable!
That's ABERDEEN beach, around a mile or so offshore there are now men in full outdoor padded wind and waterproof clothing (at all times) just in case they fall in.

My mother was swimming in there, for recreation!

The Plum Tree Race

Ok, the race is on.

I have two cherry trees in my garden and this year although the branches were arched with the weight of fruit, I enjoyed TWO cherries.
I love cherries, but decided to wait until they were just perfectly ripe before picking.

Every day I went out and looked at them, thinking perhaps tomorrow.
Then one day both trees were completely stripped of fruit.
The early birds got my cherries. :(

No one will have my plums!
Unless I say so.
I love plum jam and plum chutney, plum crumble and plum...... well, anything actually.

I sat under the plum tree today and now I'm watching those plums like a hawk.

I just need the sun to shine on these little beauties, turn them pink, and then - they will be mine!!!

This is Steven, always in the garden stealing the peanut's I put out for the birds.
He is Chester's arch enemy, he sits looking down at him from the trees - and I'm sure he is laughing at him!
Poor old Chester exhausts himself barking at him, Steven just sits there with a cheeky glint in his eye.
It's so funny.
I try to dislike him for his part in wiping out the entire red squirrel community from my area - it's quite hard!!!

This beautiful pottery jug has been hand made in Scotland, I'm really not sure of the date of this piece, all I know is the shape, colour and design are so lovely. It has slight imperfections due to the fact that it has been hand made. The gilt is slightly worn, due to it being used and loved I would imagine!

As always our wendy-house candle is organic and scented with charming old tea roses.

It has a very delicate sweet smell.

What a busy summer!
Life is always hectic here at the wendy-house, but I truly don't know where the summer is going.
My son Matthew is home from university, so naturally he has been put to work.
I know we don't really want to think about it, however winter will come around and our stoves and fires will need stoked.
There always seems to be trees needing felled somewhere in our garden and last years trees will be this winters burning logs for the fires and stoves in doors.
Once they are chopped and stored we can forget about them - until they are needed!!!

This is a lovely piece of Wedgwood. It is 22cm long, 7.8cm high and 7.3cm deep. It is filled again with an organic soy wax, 2 wick candle and infused with the scent of Highland Heather and I have placed a little stem of heather from my garden in the middle for decoration.

You will by now realise how much I adore all things vintage.

Fabric, is of course - no exception.

I am always on the look out for vintage/retro look fabrics. When I bought this fabric I thought I was going to make it into home furnishings of some kind. A visit from a friend to the wendy-house saw it entirely different to me and commissioned this bag, and here it is!

I'm thrilled with how it turned out, and adore the fact that we all see things differently, no rights or wrongs, just differently.

No matter what this fabric is made into, it makes you smile. :)

The Seaside

We have waited a long time, but you know - I don't think summer is very far away!

The sun feels warmer and I am thinking about picnics, trips to the sea side and of course barbecues.

This is a beautiful vintage look seaside bucket, like we made sand castles with when we were little. Instead of sand this has been filled with a 3 wick organic wax candle and scented with citronella to keep away our 'unwanted guests' in those heady summer evenings in the garden, or at the beach. Citronella is of course a natural insect repellent, but actually has a lovely lemon scent.

The bucket alone stands 14 cm high without the handle, approx 24cm with handle up and 15cm across the top.

Don't you just love old books, the linen look hard-back cover in its self is tantalising then you open it and there it is, ah........ the smell, I love the smell of old books, the smell alone excites me before I have even read a single word.
This book in particular is a 'gem', it is full of all the things Mother should have taught you in the 1960's.
It's a vintage 'young ladies cookery book' which I have for sale in the wendy-house, it is the most adorable thing to read. In this particular page it tells you exactly what you need for setting the table for a dinner for 4, then below how to set an afternoon tea table. Don't you just adore the thought of a 'properly' set afternoon tea table? Which starts by telling you, your 'Requirements'
Tray, traycloth, tea-cosy, 3 cups, 3 saucers, 3 teaspoons, sugar basin, cream jug and slop bowl.
2 cork mats (for tea-pot and hot water jug).
Teacloth for table, 3 tea napkins (not ever to be confused with dinner napkins, or breakfast napkins, obviously - W;) )
Cakestand with plates and d'oyleys (spelling as per book),
teapot and hot water just in kitchen.
See diagram at bottom of page just in case you were not sure how to use 'said' requirements.
I think in the 1960's they really knew about style.
However every time I find myself joyfully reading a book like this the voice in my head reading every word seems to be of a 1960's BBC presenter!
I love that, wanted to share it with you.

The glow from lovely old china at night is delightful.

If you have a large mirror and place three or five of these in a row it gives the most stunning effect.

He is my buddy, one of my favourite things in the whole world is when I'm out walking with him. Or rather, when I'm walking and he is running around like crazy chasing his stick which he likes me to throw for him.
